Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Imaging

The Inline with Health uses the latest ultrasound technology to scan specific areas of the body allowing us the ability to confirm a clinical decision of various soft tissue injuries or disorders. The handheld scanner emits high frequency sound waves to generate a picture of the layers of tissue underneath the skin. Ultrasound imaging is the safest and least intrusive of all the imaging procedures, meaning very little or no risk to the patient.

• Shoulder – rotator cuff tendinopathy and bursitis
• Foot and ankle – ligament injury, tendinopathy, bursitis, Morton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis
• Knee -patella tendinopathy, quadriceps tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, bursitis, joint effusions, Baker’s/popliteal cyst, hamstring injuries
• Elbow – tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, biceps injuries
• Wrist and hand – carpal tunnel, tendinopathy

At Inline with Health we may also use it to accurately direct treatments to a specific area of tissue damage, e.g. for dry needling techniques, ultrasound therapy, osteopathy or sport massage.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has become more commonly used by other healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists, sport doctors and surgeons in recent years to ensure the correct diagnosis is made at your initial assessment. We are the first clinic in Kent to offer diagnostic ultrasound by an osteopath as part of the appointment as well as a separate treatment option if the report is required!

There are many reasons for the increased use of diagnostic ultrasound by our osteopath: These include:

• Improved technology and image quality (for many conditions it is equal to MRI in diagnostic accuracy)
• Patient safety (non-invasive, no radiation, painless procedure)
• Results immediately available which can be considered alongside your physical assessment
• Dynamic scanning (scanning whilst patient performs movement) and comparison with the asymptomatic side.
• Visual assessment of healing, e.g. muscle tear
• Cost effective. Ultrasound is less expensive than most alternative forms of imaging.

• Scanning of ‘lumps or bumps’
• Abdominal region, including hernias
• The spine, trunk or pelvis e.g. lumbar spine, thoracic spine and cervical spine/neck area
